Wire Keeps Burning

I have an 86 trans am 5.0 FI and jus recently the wire that feeds into the back of my altanator has been burning off and there is a lot of corrosion around the connection i have had my check engine light come on once before reading out high voltage at the battery but has never been on after that one incident.... Any ideas wat can be causing this????

Re: Wire Keeps Burning

Overcharging would indicate a bad voltage regulator. Corrosion is going to cause unwanted resistance on that wire which may be the problem.

i would make sure you have a good ground and power clamps on the battery and alternator, you can check the output voltage of the alternator, at the battery while its running, it should be about 13.5-14.5, if its more, you probably have a defective voltage reg. within the alt.
