Timing tape. Finding 0 degr. mark
Hi,
My project is almost finished. Now it is time to set ignition timing.
My engine is chevy 305 87'hydraulic roller SB which originaly had
timing "SAW" above the top of harmonic balancer.(see picture "OLD" arrow)
When I rebuilded engine I replaced stock timing cover with summit chrome
timing cover. So the "ignition timing SAW" moved clockwise. (see picture "NEW" arrow)I also keeped
stock harmonic balancer. Now I need to stick timing tape to balancer.
How many degreese offset should take from stock mark on harmonic balancer
to get proper position of sticking timing tape.
I know this could be solved easy by scewing in cylinder #1 dial indicator
and finding TDC on compression stroke. but to do this I will need to remove hedder etc.
Any suggestions??
PS Sorry for my English.
PSS here is my project, already painted but photo not updated;( http://www.windcitycars.lv/forum/viewtopic.php?t=168

Re: Timing tape. Finding 0 degr. mark
You bought a cover that's an eaerlier style than what your engine came with. Not a big deal, it's all relative anyway. Forget the tape, get this:

Much easier to use, doesn't slip. just make sure you get the correct one for the earlier pointer position.

To know where the timing mark on the balancer is in relation to the timing pointer, you need to use a degree wheel and a piston stop to find the exact TDC.
