Stalling, rough idle.
Stalling, rough idle.
Hey guys, I have a 92 Camaro RS V6, 3.1L (Yeah =/ lol I want a bigger motor). For a while now the car has been Idleing pretty low and rough. And a lot of the times when I would go to slow down, the idle would drop and the car would try to stall out on me (sometimes succeeding). But if ti didn't stall out while slowing down, it would when I stopped. So I was told different things by various people and decided to change the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and all that good stuff thinking that may be a problem. Well, that didn't work. It got even worse. So I brought it to a shop and they said I had a bad EGR Valve I believe it is. That cost me with labor 517.00. So, I got it out and it seemed ok for that one day, though I only drove it 10 minutes to get home. The guy told me he had no problems with it stalling on him. Sure enough, the next day, its stalling and idle a little rough again. Did the same thing to me on the way to work tonight, several times at a stop light. Sorry for the long story, but any thoughts?

IDLE THOTS
The first thing I would check for is vacuum leaks.
Especially because you said it was worse after you installed those new parts.
You might have moved a cracked hose into a more open position.

I would do like NINA said, and also take the IAC out and clean it.
You don't have an engine light on do you?
I would also take the EGR off and make sure they didn't just clean it.
Seems like way to much to replace an egr valve.

Re: IDLE THOTS
It has an electronic one instead of a vacuum one. These are more expensive. I'm VERY glad that I have not had to replace mine. The nice thing with these is that they will (generally) set a code when they need to be replaced. If you didn't have a code and the problem persists then they mis-diagnosed your problem. I would request a refund or something personally.
Anyway, as far as the issue itself goes.... I had the same thing happen with both of my Camaros. On both of them it turned out to be the pickup coil in the distributor. Another thing to look at is the ignition module (Also in the distributor). Both are really common to go out on our vehicles. Usually the ignition module will set a code. Personally I replaced the whole distributor on both Camaros to fix the problem. No need to do that as the pickup coil is an $11.00 part. It is just a pain to replace since you have to remove the shaft out of the distributor to get to it.

Re: Stalling, rough idle.
i had the same problems with my car. i checked all other things that could be the cause and nothing worked. replace the o2 sensor on the drivers side headers. it was only a $20 part and fixed all the voltage, poor idle, and stalling problems.
