High RPM ???

I finaly got a chance to get out on the highway today and was kinda suprised about how the car was running. At around 75 mph it seemed like it was running at very high RPMs. Now since the gauge dosent work right I dont know at how high but it didnt seem normal. Then again I couldnt be sure since Ive never owned a Camaro let alone drive one on the highway. Its an 86 Z28 with a 305...everything stock as far as I know. Ive done a lot of work on it but nothing to the engine other than the normal maintenance. It felt almost as if there should be another gear to shift up to. Other than that it was a nice smooth ride. If this is normal than thats cool but if this sounds suspicious to any body please let me know. Have a 2 hr trip comming up soon and dont need any suprises.

Re: High RPM ???

ive got the same problem with my camaro, at 70 mph im running about 3250-3500 rpm, its because the od isnt engaging. listen to when your car shifts, if you only hear/feel it shift twice then your od isnt working right.

Re: High RPM ???

My 89 does this if the fluid gets alittle low. I'm thinking the TV cable may have an effect to but I dont know for sure yet.

Re: High RPM ???

it should be at around 22-2400 rpms at 70 if the rearend is the stock 3.23's. I'd say go take it out, put the shifter in 1st, drive, manually put it in 2nd, then D, then OD, or like perpetual said, just count the shifts. It might just sound like its reving alot higher than it actually is, especially if your not used to a camaro, when I got my IROC I thought it was reving high on the highway for having a 2.73 rearend ratio, then I got my tach ands fine.
