89 camaro no crank.

Ok. I have a 89 camaro v6 5spd.. It will not crank with the key... The vats is bypassed and so is the Starter Enable Relay. I can start the car by jumping the terminals at the starter but it wont start with the key... There is no power at the crank fuse when in the crank position like there should be. I also bypassed the clutch switch to make sure that wasnt the cause... I have no idea what to test now.... I am leaning toward a bad ignition switch but I want to test first. Any ideas? it cranked fine before it was parked..

The crank fuse doesn't having anything to do with cranking the starter but, it's 12v feed is from the same source as the ignition which comes from the battery via a terminal post on the starter through fusible links.

There is suposed to be 12vts on the crank fuse when the ignition is in the crank position.... I was just stating that I didnt have it. All my grounds are good.. when in the crank position, what wire coming from the ignition switch is the starter signal? I replaced the ignition switch with another one and same stuff.

Re: 89 camaro no crank.

I had that same problem a few weeks ago, parked the car, went to start, nothing no crank , ended up being ignition switch where key goes in , got a new one with a new key for 170 from the Chevy dealer. So basically its your Vats screwing the crank up somehow, youll have to buy a new ignition switch cause you have to have the key with it too. I think 170 is alot better than trying to bypass this then that then this, and the headache.

YOU ARE NOT CRANKY

He said he bypassed the VATS.
.

So:

Put a voltmeter on the starter B terminal.

When attempting to crank, what is the voltage?

Re: 89 camaro no crank.

Thanks everybody! I figured it out... there was a bad fuseable link down at the starter. Replaced that and cranks fine! Now I am going to reconnect the clutch saftey switch and start driving my winter beater! thanks for the help... if it wasnt for rgarcia63 telling me where it gets its 12vlts from I wouldnt of thought to look there. I couldnt find a starting system diagram anywhere for this thing.
