EST and Ignition Timing
I replaced my distributor, and I want to use my craftsman Timing Light to get correct ignition timing in my 85 LG4 z28. In Chilton's it says
"To set base timing, the ECM EST must be bypassed. To do this, do the following:
for all feedback carburetor systems--- disconnect the 4-wire connector at the distributor"
What does this mean? What wire do I need to detach? And Where is this wire?

Re: EST and Ignition Timing
The computer controls the distributors advance. In order to properly set the timing, it must be bypassed, putting the distributor to mechanical advance only.
Off the base of the distributor, off the back, there's the wire, follow the wire until you find the 4-pin connector. Feel in the area down towards the transmission tunnel.

This is the one with four wires?
i read on another post that when I start the car without the EST plugged in,
that I will receive an error code, and that to turn off the check engine light, I
need to turn off the power to the ECM for 10 minutes. How do I do this?
In the post it said that there is an ECM power wire? Where is that?
Can I just remove the fuse for the ECM underneath the dashboard?

Re: EST and Ignition Timing
ok,so now for the timing piece. I have a Craftsman timing light (the unit has an advance dial). How do I use it?
I know I hook the pick-up to no.1 sparkplug wire, positive clip to battery, ground negative.
Then start the motor.
What do I do from there? What engine speed do I time at?
Do I set the dial to 6* BTDC?

Re: EST and Ignition Timing
You'll have to locate your timing tab. Look straight down, from the top of the motor, behind the water pump. Tab should be at 12:00. Point the gun at the tab/balancer.
Set the timing with the engine at idle speed.
Turn the dial to the degrees of advance you are checking at, 6 sounds right for a stock motor. The light will flash and you should be able to see the notch on the damper line up with the "0" indicator on the timing tab. If it isn't, you'll have to loosen the distributor a touch to where you are able to rotate, and then rotate it until they line up.

Re: EST and Ignition Timing
Alright, the car started right up before any disconnections.
I unplugged the four pin connecter and tried to start.
I left a small vacuum line undone on the back of the carb, so after the engine died, I plugged it back in. The car would start, but only for a few seconds. Tried to keep the RPMs up a little bit, flame out through the carb.
Disconnected battery for a minute, hooked everything back up. Started. Car now idles at 2000 RPM and will not kick down.
What happened??
