Any pump you put on probably isn't going to like sucking through the dead pump in the tank.

Re: Replacing the fuel pump

if you have the tools, dropping the tank is not really that hard. I've done it twice now and the biggest headache is usually getting the exhaust off, after that its cake.

Re: Replacing the fuel pump

or you can cut a hole out above the tank inside of car. find a junk car and cut a big piece off the metal above the tank. then cut your car a bit smaller, then r&r pump. use silicone or seam sealer with some 1/2 sheet metal screws

Don't do this.

Dropping the tank is not very hard. As already stated, the biggest pain is usually the exhaust. Get the rear of the car high up on jack stands. The rear axle basically bolts right off. Drag it out of the way with a jack. You can now maneuver the tank out nice and easy. Drain as much gas out as you can before you do this so it's not heavy.

Some touchhole did that to my car, I welded a piece of metal back in. Its purly a hack job, even you make it look nice. Then you have to cut all the fuel lines for then sender, then put rubber hose on them....If your going to do it, and care about your car, dont cut the access hole.

IMO, this is NOT an option, its a hack job, people who say otherwise are hacks. I would only find this an appropriate option if the car is a racecar and still using an intank pump that needs frequent servicing. One guy here did cut a hole for the replacement and did a very nice job with the whole project, so i let him slide, but i strongly feel that this is a butchery and should not be done.

Re: Replacing the fuel pump

i was only trying to help, he may do a great job at it but i know that is not the best way,.i have a beautiful trans am that i care of an do maintenance on, i helped a buddy do it once. and i had a junk car where i cut the panel out and is my shed, if and when my 255 pump goes out i will do this to it, then post pics of it. and yes an external pump may cost around 200 dollarshttps://www.thirdgen.org/forums/attachments/suspension-chassis/168896d1230405642-lowered-3rd-gens-pics-trans-am.jpg
