Coughing And Spitting.

When i try to accelerate my 1990 camaro rs, it has a coughing/ choking noise like it doesnt want to go any faster. It has a 305 in it and i never really had this problem before, its kinda recent. I have heard several different things it could be, but the most i get is the distributor is cracked or something, and also the timing may be off...

I didnt know if the problem could possibly have something to do with the carb, since the injectors are somewhat melted (happened before i bought the car) anyone know?

Re: Coughing And Spitting.

ok timeout. Is it carb or TBI?

Secondly you need to check your timing for a 305 tbi i think its 0*, make sure its set at that, fix the dist cap if you know its broken and go from there. No sense in opening up a can of worms if youve still got some left on your plate

Re: Coughing And Spitting.

ok if its carb then how does it have injectors? if you look at it without the air cleaner assembly does it have the letters TBI on the "carb"

i just find it hard to believe that its a 90 RS with a carb, unless the motor was swapped by an anti EFI junkie lol

Re: Coughing And Spitting.

i cant check the carb yet until the weekend...it has 2 yellowish colored things in the carb with wires running to it (guessing injectors) fuel injection lol, im not 2 smart about this stuff...yet... but ya it is definately carb, and i have seen many other 90 and 91 camaros with the same 305 like mine...

Re: Coughing And Spitting.

No you dont. Carbs dont generally have injectors..... thats Throttle Body Injection.

carbs dump fuel in and mix with air. TBI like YOU have, mists the fuel into an "atomized state" where its pulled into the manifold.

camaros and birds quit coming from the factory with a legit carb in the mid 80's. Theyre unreliable, and hard to control in the eyes of the manufacturer so they put computer controlled tbi on. Its a half retarded jump between a carb and EFI

Re: Coughing And Spitting.

id fix that dist cap, then check you fuel pressure at the throttle body, i think its supposed to be like 11psi or something, if you can the best way to do it would be to hook it up in series with the fuel lines connecting to the TB and set it up on your windsheild, close the hood (without pinching the line) and take it for a drive, see if its spiking, dropping fast etc
