Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

can anyone tell me the brand name and number for the PS pulley puller and installer they used on an L-98 engine?

did you have to remove the fan in front of the PS pulley or just unbolt the PS pump (i don't want to disconnect the PS lines)?

thanks

I dont think you can unbolt the PS pump until the pulley is off.. You can rent the tool from Autozone or Advance... Or they stock them for sale too, I just bought one from O Reilly, dont remember the part number but just look on the shelves, it will be a puller/installer for GM press on pumps.

Thanks for the info but we don't have O Reilly's here and if i buy one i want to get one that has definitely worked well for others on the L-98.

Anyone have a brand and part number?

Re: Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

I dont know what the diff is between a l98 and a 5.0, but the puller only cost me about $15.00. The job took about 2 hours, make sure you get a factory rebuilt or some other name brand. Mine, as many of the parts stores carry was an off brand and I put it in and I still had that crappy whine. Even though it is warrantied, who wants to do the job again?

Re: Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

Thanks. I don't have any whine from the PS pump - I'm installing a Vortech SC.

Anyone have a brand and part number for pulley puller/installer?

Lots of manufacturers make the same tool. A Google or Yahoo search will return several.

Re: Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

thanks to all for trying to help but i already googled and have looked at many pullers. some say work on "most late model GM" or reference a specific engine (but not a 5.7L for a 3rd gen).

Snap On makes some but they go for $180 new and over $120 used for the puller and installer. i found a thread on here where a guy said Mac Tools sells a good one but his link didn't work.

i'm only interested in specific info: can anyone tell me the brand name and number for the PS pulley puller and installer they used on an L-98 engine?

yeah, i looked at that kit. sent an e-mail to SnapOn because Vortech calls for using SnapOn puller CJ117B2 which is no longer listed on the SnapOn site. they told me i need CJ117C2. i asked them if that is the same as CJ117C which is included in the kit at your link. they told me they are two different parts!

i'm pretty sure SnapOn CJ113B is the correct pulley installer for my car but it costs $91.25 which is a bit steep for a one-time use.

Most if not all GM P/S pumps use pulleys that are removed and installed using the same tool. The only differences being the diameter of the pulley. All pulleys are a slip fit onto the pump shaft. The only difference is some have keys and some do not.

I have an OEM Industrial brand tool, P/N 25398.

This tool works on the P/S pulley on my LB9 and the 3.1V6 in my '92 Lumina. I would say it would work on your L98, but if you're hell bent on needing absolute verification, I can't help you there.

if it will work on an LB9 it will probably work on my engine. and it looks like removing the fan for clearance is only three bolts and the harness!

Thank You!

I'd try to remove the pulley before fiddling with the fan. Removal wasn't required on my set-up.

there's only about 1" clearance to the back of the fan. it might be possible with the fan in place but i want to get a better angle for spraying penetrating oil between the pulley and the shaft anyway.

and it sounds like the autozone PS pulley tool will work fine. i just wanted to get one for myself if i could avoid paying SnapOn $180.

thanks everyone.

Re: Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

in case any one gives a rat's *** here's what i ended up buying:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...%3AIT&viewitem=

$24 made-in-China special. took the pulley off today with no problems and the installer shafts included with the kit fit the threads inside the PS pump shaft so it should work to install the pulley also.

i'm sure the SnapOn removers/installers are much higher quality but they are pretty expensive for one time use and the used SnapOn stuff on eBay seems to go for about 2/3 the price of new which is still high.

So you ended up doing the same thing I did and buy a cheapo one. It worked great although it was an easy job it took me a couple of hours. Makes a lot of sense what you did. Hooray!

Re: Power Steering Pulley Puller/Installer??

yeah, i got that momentus task out of the way - lol.

next step is for the SC kit to arrive. sounds like i may need to bend the PS pump hard lines slightly to make room for the Vortech bracket.
