92 RS - will not start up any more
92 RS - will not start up any more
So about two weeks ago I bought a 92 camaro rs, and when i went to try to start it up, it wouldnt start (even though they drove it to the walmart we met up at just fine). It would click, but the engine wouldnt turn over. He said the battery was new, so he went to the walmart and exchanged it for a brand new battery and the car started perfectly fine. His excuse was that the 1800watt amp in the car was why the battery died so fast, and if i unpluged that, the new one should last.
Recently, my car would overheat tremendously. It tore my upper radiator hose and melted away my first thermostat gasket. I had the therm replaced (160 F) and the radiator hose cut shoter, and the cars overheating problems stopped.
However, the car just stopped turning on like a day after I fixed the overheating. It clicks like the battery is dead (2 week old battery) but the engine doesnt turn over. The first time, my friend jumped it fine. The second time, jumper cables wouldnt work. I bought one of those jumper packs with a 17 volt charge, and that didnt work either.
Cant start the car to test the alternator, cant drive it anywhere. So I was wondering if the alternator has been going bad all along ever since I got the car, or if its a starter that needs to be replaced? Or maybe something I didnt even think of?
Another problem I've been having it that a couple times in the last week the car has just stalled completely. Once when I was just gettin in it, and twice at a red light when it turned green. Its a 305 TPI automatic, why is it stalling?

Before you can solve the latter problems you want to make sure you have no shorts.
Because it started right up after the new battery the first thing I would do is a current draw test.
Leave the car shut off, all switches off, key removed.
Connect an ammeter is series with the battery.
Use a 1 ampere scale.
If you see a draw of more than a tenth of an ampere: remove, one at a time, the fuses till it goes away.
When it goes away that circuit is the problem.
Happy Racing!
If People Drove Any Slower They’d Be Going BackwardsHow bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the day time!

Are you mechincally inclined at all?
If so, pull the starter and alternator off and go have them checked at your local parts store.
I can do both on my 92' in less than an hour and it's a simple quick check.
If they both check out, I would test for shorts as explained above.

When it wont start, is it after it has been driven a while? (Engine warm) If so, starter is getting "Heat soaked" and it's time to get a new starter. I would check for vacuum leaks in regard to the stalling issue... (Check the hard lines between the charcoal cannister and the throttle body, they tend to get brittle with age)
