how much lift

I bought a 79 truck and would like to know if I used those heads, how much lift can I get out of them without alot of machine work? Would like .500+

Stock GM heads are good to about .470" lift due to retainer to valve seal clearance. But you should always double check. Aftermarket springs and retainers will raise that limit a little bit.

Chances are the heads are large chamber smogger POS's that aren't really work investing any form of money into.

Thanks, I'm just trying to get the most out of what I got. I only have the 79 heads and the 193 tbi heads, figured the 79 are better?
