Relieving Fuel Pressure (About to change fuel pump)
Fuel pump in my trans am went out. I went to start my car a few nights ago and it would try to crank, but just wouldn't fire off so I let it sit until the next morning when I had some light. Pulled the breather off the carb and checked to see if I was getting fuel... and I'm not. I was afraid of it being the wiring, but I'm apparently getting power to the fuel pump, it's just not working... so I went out yesterday and bought a new one.
What I'm asking now is, how do I relieve the fuel pressure in the tank or do I even have to? I'm running a 305 4barrel carb and a previous owner made a hack in the hatch for a trap door to the pump (which has been smoothed out) so I do have very easy access and won't have to drop the tank. How much of a pain in the *** is this going to be?

Pull the fuse to the pump. Open the gas cap. crank engine for a few minutes. let sit for a few minutes and crank again. Should relieve all the pressure. Go ahead and wrap a rag around the line when you loosen it to catch any fuel that might be in the line still.
