Re: OIL COOLER???

These cars didn't come with tranny coolers. However you can use it for that purpose if you'd like. Route the lines however you feel looks best and mount the cooler in front of the radiator.
I installed a tranny cooler on mine. I removed the tranny lines from the radiator, changed the bend a bit, bought some new line and bent that, and routed the lines around the radiator to the front where I mounted the cooler. My trans doesn't get above 160 while driving anymore.

NAPA. Only needed about 12 inches of line, a couple of fittings, and a 3 way distribution block.
I'm using the radiator as a pre-cooler and then the aftermarket cooler after that to cool down the fluid a bit more.
My temperature sender is located in the return line to the trans.

Re: OIL COOLER???

Why wouldn't you put the temp sensor on the line coming from the trans? Putting it on the return line gives you the temp after it's been cooled off. That doesn't tell you a whole lot about how hot the trans actually is because you have little way of measuring the heat output of the radiators.

Re: OIL COOLER???

Is there a "too cold" for a trans? Or is getting it as cold as you can the best?

Re: OIL COOLER???

There is a too cold but i'm not sure what that number is.

I want to know what temp my trans is using. That's the temp of the fluid the trans is using. More important than knowing what's leaving the trans.

You could run a dual temp setup if you want to see how well the cooler(s) cools.
Do some searches on this site and you'll find more in-depth info on why the return side is a more useful location.

Re: OIL COOLER???

The following thread has a good explanation of different places to mount the sensor to get different data about the trans.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...-m-hi-tek.html

Basically, temp wise, you want the coolant to be around 180-210. The trans should be in that range as well. Colder than that isn't good. The stuff is designed for the temp range and performs the best within it.

Re: OIL COOLER???

There's a thread on here somewhere that includes a table of expected tranny life vs. fluid temp.

I would know know how hot the fluid AFTER the tranny uses, not what it starts with.

For all you know, the tranny could be cooking the fluid to 260 & running dual coolers, like you are, are what is needed to keep it low enough, to start out with.
