Piston rings shot?

Piston rings shot?
A couple months ago, my buddy's RS started making a tapping noise. Checked the oil and it was dry. Put oil in and the noise went away. Oops.
There doesn't seem to be any oil leaks and the car doesn't appear to be burning any oil. But it sure is going somewhere. It needs 1 1/2 quarts about once a month. I haven't looked at anything else.
I pulled the oil cap off while the car was running, and talk about some airflow. I'm thinking the walls got starved and shot the rings to hell. No knocking though, yet. Car never appeared to leak any oil, so she hardly ever checks it.
I'm going to do a compression check, but I'm sure its the rings. If this is all let alone, what problems could arise, worst case scenario?
