L98 HELP- i need direction!

Hello all and thank you for all of your great info. I have been glued to the site. I need help with rebuild.

Long story, short. I was told the engine was a ZZ4, ordered a comp custom grind hydraulic roller ( 236/242, .484/.501 lift,109 LSA), tore down the engine only to find it a 87-95 4 bolt - optional hydraulic flat or roller setup - 1-piece rear seal with the FLAT TAP cam setup. I pulled one lifter out and said "damn", it has the flat tappet lifters.

It has 14093638 block, 14101128 L98 heads, rpm Air-Gap intake manifold (7501), 750 barry grant carb, richmond 5-speed, 3:55 gears, 28" tall tires...

I was wanting a more aggressive cam, power and sound, but ran into it deep once I started to dig. My options now are to:

1. sell the custom grind, re-order a similar grind and replace the valve springs with LT4's, new pushrods, re-assemble and call it good.

2. keep the roller cam, retro-fit roller lifters, cam button, cam gear, chain, spider tray or lifter bars, new springs, pushrods,

3. sell the L98 heads, get new heads, new cam,...????

Im needed your opinion, Im stuck and need direction!!!

go to the salvage yard and get the lifters, pushrods, spider, dogbones and cam thrust plate from any '87-up passenger car 305. Should run you under $50, certainly your cheapest option. Another $20 for a new timing chain set, which you should be buying with a new cam anyway, and gaskets, youre still under $100.

I second Attila's reccomendation. You have a roller block, its just not equipped... yet. The lands around the lifter bores are machined for the dogbones, and you have the bosses for the spider you just need to tap 'em.

The junkyard will be your friend in this case. All you really need to do to check junkyard lifters is Mike their diameter, and ensure the roller turns freely.
