Broken Main cap no run time

My main cap on my crank is cracked on the cery end near the flexplate and i havnt run the engine yet. If i put in a different cap from another engine do i have to line bore it or will i be successful in just doing the replacement. I dont want to have to take it apart cause i just got together but if i have to I guess i will to do it right, just thought id get an opionion from you guys.

Re: Broken Main cap no run time

at the bare minimum you will have to have the alignment checked, then determine whether or not it will need to be align honed/bored.

How did the cap break if the engine has no run time on it?

Re: Broken Main cap no run time

I have no idea it puzzles me too cause we had it all checked before we assembled. Had the block bored honed clearanced hot tanked. One guy told me that i might not had it aligned when i was torqueing it down but im pertty sure that it was right. For this alignment deal can I do that or does the shop has to do it. I took the cap off from another four bolt main 80's style block so for the Most part it should be could.

It will need to be align bored and honed, no question. Doubtful that it cracked when you torqued it down unless you tried to put it on backwards.

Re: Broken Main cap no run time

engine might have been dropped at some point?

I think align honing is good enough isn't it? Either way, the machine shop will know what to do. It's similar to buying a new set of main bearing caps - same procedure.

Re: Broken Main cap no run time

Ok I seeing the crack in person now today it its just a hair fracture near the seal not sure if it goes all the way or not. So do I buy a new set of caps or just find another pair from another block?
