fuel gauge never worked right ever since I got the car.I pulled the sender out today to see how much gas was in the tank,its was about 1/4 tank and the gauge read 3/4.would the sender be bad or someone took the gauge pin off and put it on wrong?
its a 90 formula 5.0 5 speed

 

Bump... I am having a similar problem. My fuel gauge wont read lower than 1/4 tank. If it has a 1/2 tank it will read a 1/2 tank for example, and will decrease as it should but wont go below 1/4. Any suggestions?

 

From what I can tell this is a fairly expensive problem unless you go junkyard diving to get a used sending unit.

I think I remember a new sending unit being $200 or so?

Either way... my gauge will vary as much as 1/4 of a tank depending on whether I'm braking, accelerating, turning, whatever.

 

our gas gauges and the instruments that send the readings are serial liars. lol. im fairly sure that the gas gauge is about as reliable as trusting a ford. you never ever trust a ford for transportation. nor should you trust the gas gauge. lol I had the same problem in my old camaro... mine says 1/4 when it starts running out. i'll be getting aftermarket gauges, and until then i keep it topped off
