Car just died at a stop sign Friday night. Cranks and Cranks but wont turn over. I know its getting fuel the pump turns on and Im getting fuel in rail.
Checked for spark yesterday and there is none at the Distributor. How do i diagnose this problem and track down the cause

I did replace the cap and rotor last year and have only put about 10 miles on the car since then they are still like brand new

possible ideas right now

coil
ignition module
bad ground
blown fuse
ECM

id check for spark at a plug first. pull a plug wire off the plug and check it there if no spark at all id bet its the magnetic pickup trigger in the distributor if you have another one laying around slam it in and try it if it runs or sparks it will be the pickup.there easy to change just knock out the pin in the gear and slide out the shaft and bolt it in hope it cures it

 

Seems to be common these days!! I have the same problem right now and have narrowed it down (hopefully) to that. Posted in another thread too, same topic hehe!

 

did it backfire or start missing alot after it got warm thats another shure sign of the pickup then when it gets cold it will run fine but sometims they just go stright out and wont fire at all

 

These are also symptoms of a failing Ignition Module.

 

it ran fine the whole night no sputtering or missing at all......just died and wouldnt start had to trailer it home..cars in my fathers garage at his house hoping to get over there tomorrow to figure it out

changed the ignition module yesterday and it started right up. Thanks for all the help
