chance to buy 383. should I go for it?

My brother-in-laws brother has a 383 sitting around that I have the chance to buy.
The specs he gave me on it are:
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake,
balanced 400 crank and connecting rods(hes not sure if the flex plate is with it)
270 lift cam
flat top pistons
he thinks he put in roller lifters
valves were triple ground(not sure what this means??)
Needs a carb.

I can get it for 1000
Its been sitting around for about 10 years... I'm gonna have it torn apart and cleaned up before i decide to buy it
He had it in 2 or 3 different vehicles back in the day

Is this a good buy? not sure about that cam.
Still dont have a car for it but am currently looking

you said theres a couple things hes "not sure about". well before you buy an engine, especially for 1000 you really need to know EVERYTHING about it. how many miles are on the engine after the bore??

the only thing hes not sure about is the flex plate
not sure about the miles though. I'll ask him soon(he lives in Texas, I'm in Ohio)

But could'nt the shop tell me what condition the parts are in?
sorry for the newb questions. Kinda just getting into it

Re: chance to buy 383. should I go for it?

Just found out that at most it has 1000 miles on it.
He just kinda gave up on it after it tore through 3 trannys. He only had it in 1 truck.
He told me it has a serious powerband around 5500 rpm
I'll probably end up buying it.
can anyone comment on this cam size?
And also what would be a good carb. for this setup?

depending on how much power it has, id say maybe a holley 650, or if its throwing some good numbers MAYBE a 750 dumble pumper. that is, if you dont care bout gas milage lol

Re: chance to buy 383. should I go for it?

lol, with this car I will not care about gas mileage at all. It'll just be kind of a toy and weekend crusier.
I doubt I'll ever get it dynoed, so is a holley 650 a safe bet? that is also the carb. my friend suggested.
Also, when I have the engine apart for inspection is there a better cam for my setup?
