Were there any GTA's that came stock with a 5 speed and a 5.7 L engine? Everything I am reading says, the 5.7 L only came in automatic. I am asking because I am interested in a car 900 miles away from me (so I cant just take a look) the guy selling it insists it has a 5.7 L and that its was manufactured out of New Jersey. I checked the VIN in the firebird redbook, and it came up with a 5.0 L engine, (there is a discrepancy in the body style number). Carfax classifies it as a 5.0 L TBI, I checked out another car that carfax also classified as TBI, which is not true I have seen that motor and it is TPI (5.0 L).... This guy is full of crap right? 5.7 L's only came in automatic his car is a 5.0 L and he's trying to pass it off?

 

By now.. it's possible that the 5.0 bit dirt. It could be a 5.7 swap. That happens. Ask him to provide the id numbers off of the block and check those against the mortec id's.

If the 8th digit of the VIN is a E, it was a TBI. F is 305 TPI, 8 is 350 TPI.

Sounds like the car was originally a 305, so it may have come with a stick from the factory. If the seller says its a 350, check the block casting numbers and see what it really is.

 

Thanks for all your replies! the 8th number is an F! I was asking because this guy is claiming that this car is from the factory with a 350 and a 5 speed, I thought he was full of it, but there was a little voice in my head that wanted it to be true, because if it was I would want to buy it, or look for another! Not that I'm against throwing in a new engine, I just want a good stock car for a start... This is my first car bought just for fun, there's allot for me to learn and tons of decisions to make! but i like it!
