Shifter problem (Shift between Park, Neutral, ETC)

Long story short, I enter my car today it appears to be stuck in park! I wiggle the steering column and such to see if anything is sticking, but that's not the problem. I probed a hole in in the boot, and felt inside while pushing the shifting button and felt where the cable was moving, and felt it was connected to some piece (I don't know what it is, and I can't find a picture of a shifting cross section!), I pushed down on this piece, and all of a sudden, the car shifted into drive! But when I put it back in park, I can't shift back down! Anyone have an idea what my problem might be?
