I was wondering if i needed to "depressurize" the fuel system before i replace the fuel filter. if i do how do i go about doing that? also if there is anything special i should do to the filter/fuel lines other than just pulling the old one off and replacing it with the new one.
I ask because for my honda, i just took off the old FF and put on the new one I didnt depressurize the system or anything.

what i do is take gas cap off and let it sit over night or few hours if possible. ether way you have gas that's come out of the lines.

 

Just press the schrader valve on the fuel rail. some gas will shoot out, but that's how I did it. I just replaced mine on friday. Be ready by the way, gas will continue to come through the lines, so swap it as fast as possible. Goodluck!

You gonna go ahead & put in a new pump while your in there? If your gonna do all the work to reach the filter, might as well do the pump too, since your in the tank anyways.

 

I did mine recently and I disconnected the pump relay near the battery the removed the gas cap, then ran it til she died. There will be some gas coming out after you remove the filter so be prepared. I clamped the hose supplying that line with vise grips to minimize it. I just reconnected everything when I was done and she started right up. You might want to replace the pump relay as well.

Wait what? the fuel filters not in the tank......is it? i thought it was on the frame rail.

 

I was thinking of the sock filter on the pickup.

Basically, there are 2 filters. 1 to protect the pump, then a finer one under the car.

 

Yeah youre thinking of the fuel strainer not the filter unit

 

Make sure to hit the filter ends with some penetrating oil ahead of time; those things are going to be stuck in place and you definitely do not want to snap the metal lines.

I will be doing mine soon as well, but I am siphoning out my gas, so I will most likely hook my siphon up to one end of the fuel line and start sucking it all out.

2yo gas is not what I need in my car. Just kept it in there to keep moisture from building up inside the tank.

P.S. Any loctite or anti-seize on the ends of the fuel filter nuts? Just wondering since its fuel related and you don't want any contaminants in the fuel line if I should dab anything on it before re-installing.

 

I need to do one when I finally get the guts to try and drain the tank of 10 year old gas I've currently got in the TA I grabbed recently. Not sure if its worth me trying to clean the tank out or just buying a new one. Still up in the air right now.

If your going to drop and replace the tank, why not try just reclaiming it back to clean status. Some products for cleaning and prepping, just need to get some interior tank liner and do the steps as described.

Looks like we are all in the same boat. i have to drain my fuel too. my car has only been driven 2500 miles in the last 8 years.

when you say your siphon tool what do you mean. i was just gonna stick a hose in gas tank to get the gas out. is there an easier way?

 

After reading a lot of older posts of people having trouble getting the fuel filter off due to rust, im a little worried about it giving me hell when i do it on sat. the steps i have taken to try and prevent this is i went out and hosed the fitting a ton with PB blaster, tonight im going to tap it with a mallet before and after hosing down the fittings again. Hopefully that will loosen up the rust enough where it wont give me hell.


Does anyone know the sizes for the fitting on the fuel line and the one on the filter? I think the filter i have is metric (20MM).
