A/C problem

I turn on the A/C in the car (Switch the fan control to max A/C) but the compressor does not turn on. The clutch is not locked up or anything, it's just not turning on. Is there a relay somewhere that might have gone out? Thanks!

Re: A/C problem

If your A/C is low on freon, the compressor will either kick on for a second or not at all. This keeps it from wearing on the compressor since the oil is in the charge. Try getting the system checked to see how much freon you have.

Re: A/C problem

A quick test that you can do to check for your system is to unplug the A/C pressure switch (should be the big, two prong switch on your dryer canister) and connect the two prongs on the plug via a jumper wire. This will bypass the pressure switch and tell the compressor it's OK to turn on. If your compressor engages, and you don't have any cold air, it's a safe bet your system needs a vacuum test and a recharge on the refrigerant. If your air gets nice and cold, you probably have a bad pressure switch. I've seen the switches go bad on them before, but I'm not certain if it's a common issue or not.

P.S. Don't leave the plug with a jumper wire on it for long, especially if the air isn't getting cold. As Nub383 said, not having any lubrication on the compressor can lead to expensive failure. Hope you get it straightened out.
