Oil Leak 1982 Trans Am, Oil Pan?
The oil pan is leaking every 30-60 seconds on the 1982 Trans Am, stock 305 LG4. It seems to be coming from above the crossmember sliding down to the lower part of the oil pan, as if it's seeping through the pan above the x-member.
The gasket to the block seems to be ok. I just changed the oil, and it's not coming through the drain plug. It was leaking oil before it was changed, I just didn't know it was this bad.
Any ideas?
What do you think the labor cost would be to replace the pan/gasket? I don't really have the time, or an engine lift to do it.

Is it pretty close to where the trans bolts on? There is a rear main seal there that goes bad with age and can soon literally start pissing oil out. Mine did it, I took the trans off myself ( major pain! I dont suggest it! ) replaced the seal and paid a shop to put the trans back on. They didnt bother to put the dipstick back in or the trans lines. If torquing down the pan doesn't stop the leak and its not coming from above the engine like the valve covers it just might be that rear main seal. If you have to replace that seal.. you might as well do the front main seal while your at it, it's life isnt to much longer than the rear. This was one of my most recent projects, got the new seals on and have NO more oil leaks.

Re: Oil Leak 1982 Trans Am, Oil Pan?
I just had my oil pan/gasket/oil pump done about a month ago...my car is a six tho so it was a little bit easier. I tried to do it in my garage without a lift and it just was impossible. Ive herd of people doing it but i just couldnt do it...i ended up taking it to my local mechanic and me suppling parts he did it all for $160...im a salesman tho and the guy that owns the shop helped me out on the price a little. I thought i got a good deal on it as it took him most of the day to do it and labor per hour is more then that. Personally if you have a mechanic that you go to alot and they know you well just buy the parts and have them do it.

It's not coming from the rear main seal, it's sliding down from the center of the oil pan. It doesn't seem to be the front main seal.
