305 to 350 Knock Sensor

305 to 350 Knock Sensor

I want to know if my 305 block will accept a 350 knock sensor due to the intake swap I'm performing. Part may look the same but its application I'm concerned with.

I presently have the original knock sensor bolted on the 305. The pigtail connector is a bit crispy it seems so I need to replace that as well.

The entire '88 intake assembly is going to be replaced with a 1989 350 TPI setup atop the 305 block.

Question: Do I replace the '88 305 knock sensor and bolt in an '89 350 sensor on the 305 block?

The original '88 ECM will be swapped to the '89 ECM I have bought. I sense I might have issues if I don't do this simple swap due to the stock 350 tables in the PROM. I just need confirmation because upgrading to the 350 fuel delivery might cause some eerie problems I won't forsee. Need feedback, thanks !

The knock sensor applies to the engine, not the TPI system.

If it's a 305 engine, use a 305 knock sensor.

Not sure why you're doing this. Other than the 350 tables, the only difference is a lack of a cold injector on the '89. And injectors that will be bigger than the 305 can possibly need.

The 350 TPI setup is IDENTICAL to the 305 TPI setup apart from the size of the injectors. 305's used 19 lb/hr and the 350's 22 lb/hr.

Now there is another difference between these two setups, but that is because of the years in whcih they were made. The '88 will have a cold start or "9th" injector as it is also known. The '89 will not have the 9th injector. It was done away with and the memcal programming was modified in increase the injector pulse width for a cold start.

If you are retaining the 305 motor, then use your exsting 305 knock sensor and filter. The only time you would change to a 350 knock sensor and filter is it was a 350 block.

The ECM is going to be tricky one.

The ECM's are interchangable so you don't really need to change it. Only the memcal.

You'll need to find a memcal or (re)program your own memcal for an '89 305 as the cold start injector is no longer there. The injector constant will also have to be changed due to the larger injectors.

If you use the '89 memcal, you'll have to change the VE tables etc as they will be different because of the 305 displacement and the memcal is programmed for a 350.

Honestly I am in a headspin with the new terms being used such as Memcal and reprogramming. Looks like I have a LOT more to learn!

Appreciate the quick and valuable replies. I am now performing a dizzying array of forum searches for Memcal Reprogramming, wish it was easier than this but the troubleshooting must go on.

I originally thought I could slap this '89 350 intake, ECM and 350 injectors onto the '88 305 block so I can fire it up with no problems but this all makes sense now.

No wonder people stick with carbs but I will fight this one out...

Shot in the dark question: Can Moates or someone else offer me a successful PROM burn to comply with my '89 setup? A pre-Search led me to ask.

The '89 ECM is sitting in front of me, guess I will pop out the PROM as a 1st step?

Sorry to scare you like that. It can be a bit frightening at first but once you get your head around the terminology you should be fine.

Remember, the search button is your friend. You can usually find a heap of information in the stickies and the start of each subject forum.

Memcal is also refered to as a calpak. It the long blue (usually) thing under the removable cover on the ECM. It holds the eprom which contains the program and data code for running the engine and also two resistor packs that tell the car how many cylinders it should be running and how to limp home in the case of a eprom or ECM failure.

Read the stickies and try doing some searches. If you can't pin point what your after, don't be afraid to ask.

Still haven't said why you think you should do this. You'll gain nothing and will be out of the time and will have had to endure the hassle of doing it.

Tune the 305 stuff you have. Why bother replacing essentially identical hardware and reprogramming, when you could have all of the benefits with none of the expense or hassle by just reprogramming what is already installed?
