Fuel filling problem

B-4 I start, sorry for the long question. I have a carbed 83 Z with a newer 350, t-5 set in. The previous owner installed a new fuel tank. I can see the tank and really believe him. When I try to fill it, it shuts off the pump as if full. It even backs up in the filler neck. It only shows 1/2 tank at the best. Thought the sending unit or gauge was bad. Installed another gauge, same results. Decided to drive around on empty with a 2 gallon gas can to see if it was the sending unit. Found out E really means empty!!! Poured in gas from can, drove to gas station and was only able to put in 6 gallons total. It was backing out filler neck again and showing 1/2 tank. Tried to use gas can and funnel to fill it thinking pump was too fast. Same results...1/2 tank and backing out filler neck. Help please. Any suggestions

PAIN IN THE NECK

When it backs up in the neck does it go down, or stay in the neck?

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look dorky. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime!

Re: PAIN IN THE NECK

I actually tried to drive from one station to another thinking the sloshing around would allow more fuel... Held less than $2 at better than $2.50 per gallon. When I tried to fill it, it would not go down. I have shaken the car to no avail.

It would be good to use most of the fuel, then borrow/rent an orthoscope (if it’s non-sparking) and see what the problem is.

Re: PAIN IN THE NECK

One question...What is an orthoscope? Is it a peep hole that bends? I am just a shade tree with a lot of determination. I thought about using a snake (like a plumber uses) to feel if there is a blockage. Don't know if it will work though.

Instead of an orthoscope try a pipe inspection camera.

That’s a camera at the end a wire long enuff to probe all areas of the tank.

Any good plumbing supply store will be able to give you more info.

It’s waterproof but I don’t know if it’s gasoline proof.

(However it’s most likely at least solvent resistant.)

Just make sure the part going into the tank isn’t ferrous.
