Stealth Ram/Vortec question
I have an 89 GTA with a fairly stock L98. I've added headers and duals and deleted all the smog/AIR components and AC. I'm thinking about getting a Holley stealth ram and was wondering if it would be beneficial to get a set of Vortec heads first? Opinions? TIA

Re: Stealth Ram/Vortec question
What heads do you have on it? If its the 083 heads, stick with them in my opinion. I dont care for vortec heads at all. The 083 head is not a bad head for a production head. I dont know what ur goal is for this motor but, Like mine for instance......I have 083's lightly ported, milled to 62cc, 3 angle valve job, stiffer springs, on a shim head gasket. Motor makes 10.3to1 compression on a 4cc dish piston and pulls hard all the way to 6000 rpms and wants more. Of coarse I have a lot of mods up top such as slp runners, etc etc etc......
Its just my opinion but if your serious about putting different heads on this motor......I will tell ya like i tell everyone, why dump 400-600 dollars in a set of gm production heads like vortecs or double humps when you can damn near buy a set of aftermarket aluminum heads for the same price that ur gona have in a gm production iron head??? It makes no sense......after you buy the heads and have them machined for bigger valves and such, your allready too deep in them.
You can easily squeeze a lot of power out the the stockers with just a little bit of work on them. Around here it costs roughly 200-250 dollars to do what I have done with my heads. Granted thats if ur doing the porting yourself.

Re: Stealth Ram/Vortec question
Thanks for the response Jaydog. That's the kind of answer I was looking for. I guess instead of "beneficial" the real word I should have used was would it be "worthwhile". You make a good point that it probably wouldn't be. I'm not in any hurry either, just kinda trying to decide where I want to go with it. Thanks again!
