the phantom SES light

well i am back again with the damn ses light problems. i have the AIR system removed as well as the AC, and i dont have any computer tuning to reflect that. usually, when its a tad cooler outside (like less the 70 degrees) my ses light will come on and the car will bog down for a second then will return to normal rpm, then while i am driving, if i take my foot off the gas it will bog down, kind of like having an exhaust brake on a truck.

now to the ecm part of it, i scanned the computer (craftsman obd1, obd2 and CAN scanner) with the SES light on, and there are no codes, nor are there any stored codes. this is a new ECM. i can cross the pins with a paper clip (crossed top 2 right pins and got a steady flash, crossed right top and bottom pins) and nothing, light stays lit. i am at a loss of what could be wrong here.

even when the engine is warmed up this will happen. i mean this is a recurring problem, so you would think there would be codes of some sort.

i have tried the scanner on my truck (97 dodge ram 1500) and it will connect, but it cant give any detailed info for emissions due to some error.

any idea whats up with this? can someone point me to the datalink connector fuse please.

Re: the phantom SES light

If the scanner is powering on (assuming its not self powered) then it wouldnt be a fuse, have you verified the data wire is not broken between the connector and the PCM?

could this be caused by a clogged cat?

Re: the phantom SES light

Did you follow the paperclip directions precisely? put paperclip in, THEN turn car key to on, then read the flashes?

Re: the phantom SES light

the thing is, when i go to restart the car, the SES light isn't on. only when i stop on the side of the road to try to get the damn thing to turn off will it stay on, but i dont want to be flashing codes on the side of the road. ill give it a try again next time it comes on, but i can never get anything.

Re: the phantom SES light

Doesn't matter if the light is on, if there are codes they will be stored. Why not get codes on the side of the road - it's a simple 3 minute process? Just leave the bottom dash cover off, and keep paperclip in hand.

Re: the phantom SES light

well, had the light again today, in 80 + degree weather. and stuck in the clip, then turned on key, and the light just stayed on. im not really good with wiring diagrams, so if someone could please help me trace the wires without having to rip the dash apart too much, that would be a huge help. thanks.
