How does the gas pedal install properly?

How does the gas pedal install properly?
My gas pedal has been removed and reinstalled, but now when i step on the gas, the metal arm to which the pedal is mounted hits the "plate accelleator lever" (the piece that is bolted on top of the petal and is all metal). i barely get any travel in my pedal.
