Newb with ?
New guy here
I have a question about a set of heads I have for a motor I'm building for swapping in to a International Scout. I have a set of 14102193 swirl port heads that I,m going to use on a 355 SBC, I have read that these heads suck but I don't want to build a barn burner just a low RPM torque motor, Will these heads work for what I have in mind?
I plan to have about 8.5-9.0 comp with a Edelbrock performer manifold and 600 CFM Edelbrock carb, block hugger headers with 2"-2 1/4" dual exhaust. what I looking for is a good cam, any body have any suggestions? Sorry I don't have a F-Body I'm just looking for some GM advice, I mostly know air cooled VW's [please dont hold that against me
]
Thanks for any help.

Re: Newb with ?
A 355 huh. I'd use a 650 cfm speed demon carb and an Edelbrock Air Gap Vortec manifold (with Vortec heads, of course) because it's a dual plane manifold and will make better power and torque than a single plane, especially when you run a hotter cam with that demon carb. The only Edelbrock stuff I like are their manifolds. Demon carbs are superior, in my opinion. As far as your heads, they are at the bottom of most performance guys' lists....I'd get a "cheap" set of Vortecs because they make great torque and love the cubes. Your heads shouldn't be swirl ported as cast, but there is mixed information about whether or not your heads are swirlported. You can get a set of assembled Vortecs for around $850.00. I'm figuring you're on a budget, though.

12558062 is the casting number you want on junkyard Vortecs. It's easier and cheaper to buy them already assembled, though, if you're going with a hotter cam.

193's are "traditional" port location SBC heads, not Vortecs. They are indeed swirlports.
Therefore, New2Chevy, your recommendations are moot (could call them "wrong", but we'll be nice here).
The 193's are fine for your low-RPM torque application. In fact, I'd call them ideal. A 650 carb would be too big. Whether you want to go with an Edelbrock Performer carb or a VS Holley is your choice - personally, I'd go with a 600 CFM Holley VS with a Quick Fuel Technologies adjustable secondary housing for better secondary opening adjustability, but that isn't a big deal one way or the other. With a low duration 4x4 cam in the 252-258-ish advertised duration range, Performer intake manifold, small-tube exhaust (I assume your block huggers are 1-1/2" primary tubes - stick with 2" exhaust from there), you'll pull stumps all day long.
Oh, just don't ask anything about how to get the 350 into the Scout - I'll have to draw the line at "third gen applicability" there.

Thanks for the reply, I bought a set of brand new 193's for cheap, I was looking at one of Comp cam's Xtreme 4x4 cams [254/262 dur.] as for getting the motor in the Scout, I have a adapter that bolts up the Chevy to the IHC trans [727 TF] all I have to do is make motor mounts. Thanks for your help

I know the 193s aren't Vortecs. Respectfully, I suggested that he GET Vortecs. I believe my recommendation is quite sound for torque.I do admit that the 650 carb may be too big for torque, but wouldn't it work well with a set of Vortecs, especially on a 355 ci engine?

You said to get a Vortec intake before you said get Vortec heads, and said his current 193 heads weren't swirlports. One would conclude you were recommending he get "better" Vortec heads than what he had, and since we've had members that were told all centerbolt valve cover heads are Vortecs, I wanted to make sure it was understood that 193's are swirlport, centerbolt valve cover, '87-up intake bolt pattern heads, and not Vortecs.
A 650 would be fine with Vortec heads and more cam, but with the swirlport heads (which are very good for low-RPM torque operation), it would be bigger than necessary and would hurt low-RPM throttle response. A 500 or 550 would actually be even better.
By the way, Quake, while we're at it - make life easier on yourself and get an '87-up bolt pattern Performer intake. It'll cost a little more than the 2101, but will be a lot less hassle to install.

Re: Newb with ?
Sorry about the confusion....I am usually very articulate and careful when I write my stuff. I meant that he should get the 650 carb only if he gets the Vortecs, since they have more flow. I guess I was tired that night. NO, I KNOW I was tired.
