please help me on rusty engine.
please help me on rusty engine.
so i got my 350 block bored, honed, washed. bought a eagle 383 balanced rotating assembly. put it all in. i went out to check it out today and i seen rust on the cast steel crank shaft gasket surfaces and on 1 cylinder wall. i am so pissed. i imediately soaked the whole thing in oil and wrapped it in plastic till i get home from work. so my questions are.
would you tear it all back down and clean it?
what would you use to remove the rust?

Its probably just some really light surface rust. I'd clean it off the gasket surfaces and the cylinder as well as possible. Hopefully just some solvent and a rag will clean it up fine. The gasket surfaces you could use a wire brush or steel wool or something like that and just dont get any broken off pieces of that in the engine. I wouldnt use anything but a solvent or trans fluid or something similar on the cylinder wall. Chances are if its just a light surface rust, its not going to hurt anything.

Depends how bad ( deep) it is. For the bore I would start with some fine wet/ dry paper and lots of WD40 and see if you can sand it out. If it is pitted then you have problems .
By gasket I assume you mean front / rear seal surfaces; not so important so long as not pitted

its a really good idea to spray WD40 in your cylinder walls and other vulnerable spots if its not completely assembled and exposed ( even on an engine stand covered with a bag), also the Light Rust in the cylinder wall, dont worry, the rings will eat that up when youre breaking it in.
