During this past summer I added an oil temp. gauge. Normal cruising in 75-85F degree weather I saw 180-190F oil. Coolant temp. ranged from 190-200F. This is a mechanical gauge with the sensor in a bung on the oil pan on the side. 6QT pan. No oil cooler. Gauge and sensor are accurate.

On the hottest days, even when getting on it a bit I never saw over 210, maybe 215 for an oil temp. Coolant was at 220 at it's hottest. Oil pressure runs about 25-30PSI idle, 55-60PSI hot

Is this "OK"?

Would a different sensor location (maybe going with an electrical sensor) give me a more reliable temp? This hot enough to burn off crap? I assume it's alot hotter circulating in the engine and burning off byproducts. Maybe I'm paranoid.

 

Usual oil temps are 15-20 higher than coolant once warmed up and stabilised.
The Vette L98's take the oil temp from the port into the oil gallery above the oil filter

 

Is this port above or below the oil pressure sensor? I was to add an oil temp sensor and secondary oil pressure sensor in my L98 but am not sure of best location.

 

The Vette L98's have the temp sensor in a hole above the oil filter so it monitors the temp of the oil as it leaves the pump.
The normal pressure location is top rear of block.
You want the pressure sensor as far from the pump as possible so it will show pressure drop soonest.
The older blocks had a plug in the oil gallery behind the water pump which you could fit a gauge to so you could monitor oil pressure at the end of the run

 

Oil temperature is usually around the same temp as the coolant. I run a temp sensor in the front of the pan sump. When my oil reaches operating temperature, I know the engine is warm enough. Coolant can get hot before the oil does and warm/hot oil is a better indication of how hot the engine is.
