ok well i have a 87 iroc 305tpi/auto with 27k original miles that i will be driving through highschool and after and its my baby and well im hopping to get more power out of her just enough to get up with the lt1's and such but i dont have all the money for a new engine or to swap a bunch of performance parts on and honetly i dont really know crap about building a engine due to having no father or anyone that cared about cars but i wanna rebuild my 305tpi engine not with a bunch of performance stuff just a couple extra parts to get more of a idea on all the mechanic stuff like i just wanna tear down the engine then rebuild mostly to fac. specs.

so what tools will i all need to just rebuild it? i currently dont have crap in the tool catergory so i need to know what tools to buy and what other products i should buy to make the process of taking out, tearing down, rebuilding, and re-installing the engine. iv been looking at this 1 website called boxwrench.net and i was going buy the rebulding the small block chevy dvd/book to help me is there any other dvds or books that you guys suggest?

the point of rebuilding the engine isnt to really add any performance its just i really wanna do this and to get the engine back to perfect condtion and so i feel i actually did something and i just would like to know how to do all this. yes the car runs perfect it just got fixed at a pro. shop.

Both depends on your resources and your willingness to get the job done in the very best that you can do and how quick you can learn.

As a start I would suggest you bying a GM Factory Shop maual for your y, m, m. (year make and model). There probaly, for your car , is a 2 or 3 volume set.....you probably not need the wiring diagram book right now. Try Helm Incorporated for new or E-bay or amazon for used. Start with Engine first, then go to the chapters you feel important to you such as maintenence. Good luck.

The Helm version is hands down the best -- also the priciest, at
about a frankln, when last I checked. If you have the original owners
manual, check it for an order form. Helms is the publisher of all
GM licensed shop manuals.

For tools, start w/ the basics -- screwdriver & plier sets, combination
wrench sets (metric & SAE), 3/8'' drive sockets (metric & SAE), a
ratchet, breaker bar, and a couple of extensions. Decent stuff
(Craftsman, Lowe's) will also be in the franklin range. Avoid the cut-rate
stuff like Harbor Freight, for these items. This will get you started.

I'd start with some basics like a good flowing exhaust system. With
only 27k miles, it's been sitting more than used. Get things refreshed,
like hoses, etc. that are susceptible to time decay. Then move the
next bang for the buck is a good flowing exhaust system.
