Starter motor questions
Does anyone know how fast a good, stock, starter motor spins the engine with all the plugs out? What about how fast with all the plugs in?

Ok wow...nobody has any idea...maybe a stupid question.
I ask because when I have all the spark plugs in my 305, it sounds like it is very hard for the starter motor to turn the engine over. As a matter of fact, it hangs up on the compression really bad.
At any rate, does anyone know of any good starter motor rebuilding guides?

I actually found a good lil video that helps with what I'm looking for. I think my starter motor isn't spinning fast enough.

Wow I'll admitted that's an OUT there question man lol. It sounds like a bettery issue if it's turning too slow to start it.

I'm the type of guy who likes to look at the simple stuff first so, I'll just throw this out.
Check your battery voltage while cranking. If you don't have a meter, borrow one or go to any parts store and pick up a cheap one. A good, fully charged battery will stay above 10.2-6 volts under load.
Check your cables. Especially the block grounding wire. Make sure it's clean and tight and the cable is in good shape. Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.
Check your timing. Your description of the problem sounds like the timing is too far advanced. Have you done anything recently that would affect timing? Is it worse when the engine is warm?
Maybe you already checked these things but you didn't mention it so, I thought I'd add my 2¢.

I'm doing this when the engine is cold. As a matter of fact, this car has been sleeping for 5 years, and I just now acquired her and am in the process of trying to start her. I checked the distributor out (which is why I pulled all the plugs as to check them too). And then I made sure I had spark.
To me it seems like the starter is just not 100% like it use to be. So maybe I need to scrape off the rust and lube it up.
I'll keep you guys posted. Maybe throw a few pics up.

Hey guys..ok so I cleaned up the starter motor and took it all apart. Cleaned it with mineral spirits and degreased it. The only downside was in order to take it apart, this long bolt that holds the back of the starter to the front broke. Basically the bolt sheared itself because the threads were rusted and blah blah. :/
Does anyone know if I was to go to the junk yard what trucks or whatever would have the same starter motor that's in the 305?
