Its not wanting to go in and it gets cocked eyed. I am afraid of hurting it. Need some help to get this lil bugger in.

 

Well to be honest with you i dont recall ever having trouble getting the new bushing in but heres a few things to consider.

1. If you just trying to line the bushing up and hit it with a hammer thats bound to give you fits because youll never apply force to the bushing equally and it will tend to twist and do funny things. Make sure you use a socket or a wooden block or something of that nature.

2. Use a big hammer. Using a 3 or 5 pound hammer will not only have a larger surface area on the head which will tend to distribute force more evenly but you also wont have swing as hard or as fast to get the same amount of force as you would with a regular hammer. This will allow you to have better control of the hammer.

3. You can chamfer the outer edge of the bushing a little to help it go in strait.

 

Thanks I will try that tommorrow. My conversion on my camaro is almost complete and that lil bugger is just giving me fits :P.

 

Yup isnt that how it always is? The little detail stuff always gives you fits.

 

Being it's so tight, put a light film of grease in the crank before you drive the bushing in. A little lube sure can't hurt in a case like this.

 

Yea tried that. I also heard to put the pilot bushing in the freezer over night it helps. So i am doing that as well.

 

If it's going in so tightly, it may close up the ID of the bushing somewhat when you drive it in. Before you lay on your back and try stuffing the trans in and it won't go, you should consider checking the fit of the input shaft in the bushing before trying to install the trans. Might just save you a lot of work checking it out now rather than later.

 

put it in the freezer first

 

hey are you using a solid brass bushing or one with the niddle bearings?

 

Solid brass. its not a pilot bearing. And Trust me already checked the bushing on the transmission input shaft. Because i was worried it was tight snug like that if it was like that on the input shaft its Not thankfully slides in smooth like butter. Its already in the freezer now. Tommorrow is when i will put it in. One thing i did notice if you put the pilot bushing on the other direction on the input shaft it was hard as heck to push it through. Noticed it had more of a curve on the side it slides on easy and the other side it has just straight edge Meaning in the inner circle where the input shaft goes through.

 

I said check the intput shaft fit after you install the bushing because it may close up a bit since the fit is so tight in the crank.

 

Oh okay. I understand now. I will also do that. Once I pull the bellhousing off i will move the tranny under the car to do that once the pilot bushing gets in. Also when I got the pilot bushing the parts store told me to grease the splines and where the pilot bushing goes in so it would go in smoothly. I really don't want this bugger from stopping me from getting my car done today. I have 2 more days until work since i took vacation off to get my car converted. So in luck today is a better day for that pilot bushing to go in. It should be well enough frozen now since its been in the freezer all night.

 

Freezer the bushing and heat up the crank. Just put a propane torch on it to get it quite warm to the touch. Just like installing pinion bearings....

 

Update i took it out of the freezer and i popped it in no problems thanks everyone.

 

I had that same trouble never tried to freeze it though, got it in but it sucked took me a awhile. Wont ever forget this post because of it! Great advice Something so simple yet such a pain.
