opinions on sub-6000rpm 350
I'm thinking about building a carbed 350 from a long block we have sitting in the shop. It's a 350 from a 95 truck and it's the HD engine so it has the roller cam, factory forged crank, rods, the hypereutectic pistons, and 4 bolt mains IIRC.
Not sure on what heads I'll be using (depends on if the stock heads check out, then I'll garage port them and machine them for the valve springs I'll need if not, probably Vortecs or the Vette TPI heads), but I want the power band to be under 6000 with a flat torque curve. I'm thinking about the 270HR cam (220 int./224 exh. 0.474 int./0.474 exh. lift 111LSA) possibly w/ 1.6RRs. I'm also looking at the 280HR (224/224 .525/.525 110lsa ), no 1.6s. Which of these cams do you think would better meet my needs?

My car is a L03 car. That screen name was for a 91 Z I didn't get and ended up with this RS lol. The engine I'm talking about in this thread is for another car altogether. Sorry for the confusion

My opinions:
Carb'd is fine if you dont mind the fuel economy!
As to the camshafts... It depends on your drivetrain. if you have a bit of gearing (numerically higher) then opt for the camshaft that will take advantage of the quicker/higher rev range. If you want a more drawn out "mid-range torque" sort of vehicle then certainly go for the camshaft that will give better VE% for the mid-range you seek.
Everything should match! (converter, trans, diff) and the cam/intake should match the head's maximum flow capability (a large port head with slower intake port velocities and higher flow capability will want to rev quicker to take advantage of that design, so opt for numerically higher gears, a larger camshaft, etc... )
My biggest recommendation to people with a few $$$ to spend is buy a drop in LSx combination or similar for reliable fuel efficient N/A power. Use the automatic 4L60 or even switch to a built 700R4 for maximum money saving / fun potential.

Re: opinions on sub-6000rpm 350
I'm not building this car (not the white RS, that one's getting a 6.2 L92 swap hehe) for fuel economy. The engine that I'm referring to in this thread will be going in a track car, and it'll only be used for a fun car. Probably be using heads with somewhat low flow, but high port velocities to build torque down low. I don't plan on using this car where high RPM power would be advantagous, so I need it to come on as low as possible and stay strong til 5500-6000. I'm thinking I'll use a 700R4 with ~2000-2400 TC (don't want to run a RPM converter due to overheating issues running up the mountain) and a 3.23 or 3.42 gear. This range gearing should keep me in the powerband I'm after (~1800-5500) but not make the car a dog accelerating. With this information, do the cams I've listed seem to be a good match for what I want from the car?
