would investing in the factory service book help me out at all with trying to figure out the problem with my 87 trans am tpi

once the car is warmed up after driving it for about 20 to 30 mins it is slow to accelerate when i get the rpms above 1500 it spits and kinda hesitates almost and sometimes even backfires on me

hmm, well it sounds to me like its a spark/electical problem. If im right your probably running rich. If it were my car i would probably do a tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Are you sure its not throwing any codes?
