Re: ground straps !!

I had 2 smaller ones on my '74 Camaro other than the big 1 in back of the block. 1 went from batt negative to the fender, & 1 on the other side from fender to the block. They were not limit straps for engine movement. IDK why they were there but I never had electrical gremlins in the ol' Camaro!

Re: ground straps !!

the reason why i ask this is because my 88 T/A is running rich . i have replaced the following
pluggs
o2 sensor x5
new exhaust manifold gaskets
no vaccum or exhaust leaks
rotor
CTS
FPR
serviced injectors
map sensor
igniton contorl module
idle air temp sensor

it just runs really rich

if its not the CTS , o2 sensor , map , or vaccum leaks . could it be the ground affecting my ignition "weak spark "

Re: ground straps !!

yeah . i was talking to the guy at the auto parts store , even he was stumped. as far as my knowledge oes i know that its the CTS , o2 sensor , and map sensor that affect fuel distribution .

Re: ground straps !!

That's more than I learned!! So I'm going to ask basic Qs--

is it possible a wire was overlooked & not connected?( O2, etc?)
timing is good?
all sparkplug wires on correctly?

Sorry but that's my and I owe ya 3 back!!

Re: ground straps !!

yeah , i went over the plugg wires twice , o2 is plugged in coil isplugged in . i just cant find anything else that would cause this . the only htibg that makes me wonder is that ground strap behind the head on the passengers side . all other grounds are intact . i think thats the only one you have to remove to remove the heads.

Re: ground straps !!

reply to PM : yeah , its cool , i will try doing that tomorrow. its just that the passengeres side of the engine is so cluttered up and a PITA to reach thta start , not to mention getting the valve cover to fit right without the gasket falling off !

Re: ground straps !!

You can put the strap where ever you can, it doens't have to bolt behind the engine. Lots of folks have hard time even with all stock ones and thats ok, just move it to a bolt you can reach but don't leave em lose.

Re: ground straps !!

so , i didnt find one on the drivers side . theres only the one on the passengers side BTW how many ground straps are there ? so i can ground to the intake manifold i.e. distributor clamp? also yesterday i installed a new rotor and ignition control module and i turned on the car and forgt to plugg in a plugg wire and i could hear breaks in the exhaust . so after shutting it off i plugged the cable back in and still the car smokes and the exhaust sounds a little choppy . could it be that my firing order be out of sync. or something ?

Re: ground straps !!

today i messed with the ground strap . turns out there is two behind the passengers side head . and also i found a stud with a nut behind the drivers side head "whats is it for ???" well anyways i couldnt get an open end wrench or a socket wrench behind the head . tranny dipstick and air tube that leads to cat " i bent them out of the way" but there was still another tube that i couldnt move so i just tightend it finger tight .still my car runs rich and i can hear the exhaust break "not a steady flow " it pisses me off !

Re: ground straps !!

Maybe 1 from the head to the fire wall, the other to the frame??

If it's a small miss, like 1 cylinder not firing, check the sparkplug wires 1 more time. I know you did a couple times yesterday.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 your firing order?

Also check the cap & ensure the plug wires are in the correct place and on tight.

IDK how to tell if the distributor is "off a tooth" from the cam gear.

Best of luck!!

Re: ground straps !!

when i give it some throttle it pops and during idle i can hear the exhaust break for a split second . the dizzy is correct and not off by a tooth . the plugg wires are in correct order btw i hate these plugg wires , they are duralast and i hate the straight boot style because you never know the its on there tight whereas the 90* boot style you can pretty much feel the click , is there a set that is all 90* ? anywho this car is a PITA bought it for 800 bones and it ran strong , up until i blew the ehad gaskets , ever since then it just went downhill . bought it for my 18th b day last year and i only drove it one week its been sitting more than it has been driven . tatal money pit .

Re: ground straps !!

Summit & Jegs sell 90* boot plug wires. They have different brands to choose from as well as milimeter thickness & colors if you wanted to co-ordinate the engine//body color. They also sell "their own brand".

Don't give up-- you'll get someone to respond to help ya!!!
I gave 5 for "our project" 3 years ago Christmas--Yea--my wife actually likes to do whatever she can!!
It's all a learning thing for us. TGO has been a GodSend!!
