What do i need?

Hello every one!

In my 86 iroc-z i swaped the engine for a carbed 350, the guy who i bought the engine from told me it came out of a 78 l82 corvette. i checked the block vin and it finished with 010 (dont remeber the rest but could go check it out) and the heads are 882's. the only thing i have done to it is a 2500 stall, flow tech headers and a spred bore holley 650 double pump that i have not instaled yet. I was thinking about also changing the cam. i have no idea witch one to chose and what specs i need for my engine. could someone tell me what specs i should me looking for?

Thanks Mr.camaro

Re: What do i need?

You need an air cleaner pretty badly. Look at how small that sucker is!

Don't do a cam until you do the heads. Those heads are brutally bad, and adding a cam will take away whatever low end torque you have, and you won't gain any top end HP. Do both at once when you can afford to.

Re: What do i need?

Sonix: has the Enzyte made any noticeable difference?

I'm TEASING!!!!!!

IMO that's actually about the best air cleaner you can get under a stock hood. Regardless of what the lastest Enzyte commercial tells you, size doesn't matter (just ask your wife)! Flow matters. I had the drop based 14in cleaner like most reccommend, but when I peaked in, I noticed that it drops so far, that the end result was only 1/2 inche air flow clearance all around. I also switched to a 9in cleaner that doesn't drop with a 2 inch filter, and now I know I have 2 inches of air flow into the carb. Plus, it's nice to know the chrome cleaner isn't rubbing a hole in a plug wire like the 14's do.

Another reason size doesn't matter - there's a local guy that runs a 500-something ci motor and he has a 1inch filter in a 4 inch cleaner due to lack of room under his hood, and given the amount of tire he can leave from the stoplight, he gets plenty of air!

I agree with the cam though - the heads suck, and a cam won't do ya any good really (I have the same heads). So save those pennies for better heads and cam at same time like mentioned.

Re: What do i need?

Also - are you using a geometry corrector for your TV cable? and using a return-style regulator right?

Re: What do i need?

Yes i think so for the tranny, i tried it with out the regulater and it worked so i left it like that.

Is it possible to know what car my engine is from with the front passenger tag behind the alternator? if so it is KO3 22 C2R. What heads should i be looking for? Vortec?

Thanks

DO NOT JUMP ON THE VORTEC BANDWAGON....unless you are willing to do some serious modification. By the time you make all the necessary mods, a set of brand new Edlerocks will only be 2-300 dollars more. Im in this middle of this swap as we speak and the vortecs are not that simple...

1) To run any kind of cam you will need to get the valve guides machined. There are a few ways around this but they are either a) other expensive parts b) way to 'ghetto' and risk engine failure.

This also means you need new valve seals, new valve springs, etc.....you will probably also need slightly longer pushrods...and a vortec style intake manifold.

My heads, used cost 175....resurfacing and magnaflux 120....machining the guides.....another 100....pushrods were 50, valve springs and keepers were part of a cam package but will run about 150....vortec manifold will run about 175.....you see, Im hovering in the 700 dollar mark....A set of complete heads will run 800-100 depending on what you want.

I dont regret going the vortec route, as it has been a learning experience, but its turning out to be more expensive and way more problematic in the long run.

If you're going from "standard" factory SBC heads to Vortecs, this is a hard deal to beat http://sdparts.com/details/scoggin-d...ter/sd8060akit

Keep the cam under .525" lift and max RPMs to 5500, like a Comp XE268, would really wake up that engine.

Those are decent heads. The chambers are a bit big, especially for aluminum, and really too big if you have dished pistons. Figure on a cam change to get any kind of performance out of it. They do have guide plates, so hardened push rods are usually recommended.

Re: What do i need?

I'm getting the heads at a local speed shop dunno if there the same chambers, I'm pritty sure I have flat top pistons so they should fit, the l82 was rated at 220 hp I think in 78, about what will I be looking at with those heads with my stock iron intake and holley carb? (I'm hitting 14.3 on the 1\4 btw)

Hey, your picture is my car I really don't know how much power you'll make, but I saw my car and thought "that's awesome".
