350 afr and hsr, what cam????

Ok, it's about time to get heads and cam for my iroc and this is the combo I'm thinking in putting together;

350 .060 over n/a roller block
hsr 58mm TB
24#injectors might go with 30#, Kirban afpr, walbro fuel pump
afr 190cc heads with upgraded springs
2800 stall 3.73 gears
hooker's LT, 3.5 exhaust dual 3"
and all the goodies.

The only thing am stuck on is what cam to get. I don't wanna overcam the motor since it's just a 350, but I would like to have a good, strong running weekend warrior. I don't really care about emmissions either since I can slap a sticker on myself.

I downloaded the new camquest software from comp cams and they recommended;
1. xr294hr
2. 282xfi
3. 304hr

Which I think there really big cams for a 350. I was leaning more towards the xr282hr or maybe the xfi280, or should I go with a smaller cam? car is a weekend warrior not daily driven.

So what do you guys think?

btw, I love lopey f-bodies

How hard would this two cams be to tune? , do I have to degree it? am thinking in getting a higher stall maybe a 3500 and drag radials, but oh poor of my little whining rear end lol

Re: 350 afr and hsr, what cam????

Ok, I just got the 190afr's and was thinking in just installing them without the cam for right now. Since I wanted to pull the motor to do the whole heads/cam swap and have a professional shop built it, it was gonna be kind of a pita but I have already replaced head gasket on my car myself with motor in car and it aint too bad, specially with the HSR

But my questions are:

would I need longer pushrods with stock cam?
I have a set of gold crane cams 1.6 7/16 rockers I want to use, what kind of pushrods do I need?
what head/intake gasket to use?
I dont really need to tq the intake manifold bolts or would i strip the threads on the heads??
Is it the same procedure to adjust the valve lash as in stock heads?
how much of a power difference would it be just with heads?
should i just wait and do heads/cam same time?

IDK man IDK those heads look so good Im tempted to just go ahead and bolt them up!! even tho I will spend twice when I get the cam, but it might take me a few months to get all that other stuff to support the cam, so I want to enjoy these heads meanwhile.

Any advice would be greatly appretiated!

You'll gain some good power (40+) with just the heads, but you're really holding that motor back with the stock cam.

I would vote for the xe282hr. Fat midrange.

Lingenfelter 74211 hydraulic roller. I would use 1.65:1 rockers to take advantage of the AFR's flow at higher lifts.

A great choice to run with an automatic transmission.

I'm really happy with the Comp 268XFI in my combo. Can't go wrong with that cam.

Re: 350 afr and hsr, what cam????

wanted to update.

finished installing heads/cam on sat. motor sounded strong but didnt have time to do full break in of cam till monday, just wanted to make sure motor started before i headed home since car is at my work shop and we stayed working on it pretty late after work.

i need help figuring out what would be a good starting point with timing and fuel pressure before i get it tuned...? i was running 8degrees and 39psi fuel on stock heads and cam, i have 24lb injectors.

also, on the valve lash...is the sequense the same as in the gm manuals?? ive done it a few times with old motor as it says in the manual but not sure if its the same with this new combo? my friend who put motor together set the valves not too tight to break in cam but i need to redo them to make sure..

Re: 350 afr and hsr, what cam????

hydraulic rollers don't need the cam "broken in". New valvesprings, however, do need a gentle initial service life for the first 100 miles or so.

well am shooting for mid 12's on et's with my combo lower than that would be nice. Won't be able to race at the track till i get rear end rebuild though and tune, will take her tomorrow for first test drive, I just adjusted the valves, set timing to 8 and fuel pressure 42 for now...
