fuel tank sump or just bulkhead fitting

Hello, I know that this has been discussed a few times but I had some questions. I need to redo my fuel system and had some questions.

I know a lot of people add sumps to the stock tank, but looking at the shape and mounting of a third gen tank I almost wonder why. With the stock tank having the rear downhill I wonder why a person can not just weld a fitting to the rear of the tank, or maybe just drill a hole and add a fuel cell bulkhead. This may seem like a half *** way to do it, but with the thirdgen tank the fuel is always going to want to sit in the rear anyway. On some cars the tank is shaped different to where this would not work.

So has anyone tried it. Is there some info I am missing?

I have thought of doing this before and would like to see if it works.

Re: fuel tank sump or just bulkhead fitting

im also interested in this one. im getting ready to redo the fuel system in my 84 and looked into tanks, cells, ect. the only cell that was a bolt in was from fuel safe....24 gal. for $2500. not what i was trying to spend on the tank.

ive read were some people were using tanks from 4th gen.'s. didn't fit perfectly but were able to make it work. and there are some less expensive 4th gen. tanks/cells with sumps welded in.

so keep us posted on what ya do and how it works...

Re: fuel tank sump or just bulkhead fitting

I think the bulkhead makes sense, the tank is naturally sumped by the way it is mounted in the car, so I am going to try and drill a hole, then place a fuel cell bulkhead in it with a jamnut on the inside of the tank, and a nylon seal and jamnut on the outside, I will let you guys know if it works.

I am wondering if you have done this yet. Did it work and not leak? I really want to do this as well.
