Ok, I probably know about as much as you do about cars right now because im kinda new, but no harm putting in my 2 cents right? Yes I do think your timing could be doing it, but also, what is your oil pressure like? My car is sort of having the same type of issues, and im pretty sure my timing has something to do with it. But what do you experts think? Timing isnt too hard to check, if you have the manual or if not the guys at autozone could help you with figuring out how to check it. you can listen for vacuum leaks, and also try looking up a vacuum diagram, i dont know if your car still has it, but there should be a sticker under the hood right by the front bumper that has a small diagram you can look at. mine is kind of faded out, but it helped me find a few lines that were either hooked up wrong or not hooked up at all. Trust me i know how you feel I live in california too, and smogging sucks!

check the vacuum modulator on your trans. that might be leaking causing your idle problem
