1987 iroc z timing

I just picked up a 1987 iroc z 5 speed tonight. The has a TPI 350 in it.So I've been told,not sure yet haven't checked numbers. It has a TPIS intake on it,edlbrock headers,working AC .Whoever had the car before me know what he or she was doing.I'm learning these cars.I came from owning a 1970 GTO so fuel injection is new to me. Anyway the car cranks slow and hard. I put a new battery in it and still does it. It sounds like timing is to advanced to me.What should the timing be around?Also If anyone has any pointers out there,let me know.thanks.

Generally if the timing is too far advanced, it will start ok when cold, but really hard to turn over when hot. I'd suspect your starter. Should be a tag under the hood with timing set instructions on it but with the mods on your car someone may have set it a bit different.

I'd agree with the starter theory; headers on these cars tend to kill factory starters unless wrapped or coated well.

ok..that makes sense then..it cranked easy when it was cold but once I drove it 15 miles or so it cranks very hard.I stalled out and couldn't start up...middle of a major intersection always fun!...thanks I will check timing today.

Set the timing for 6 deg BTDC. You have to disconnect the ECU timing control wire first.... brown wire. Connector is near the firewall top, on passenger side, inside the engine compartment.

ok great I will try that.It looks though that the distributors cap is screwed to the intake might just look that way..has 3 wire harnesses plugging into it but they go in from the drivers side...I'm pretty sure this engine isn't stock so if its say an 1989 TPI 350 is the timing ajustment the same?
