Need a little advice on cam size BBC

Hey fellas could use a little advice on some good cam sizes for my 454 going in my Z28. Always had small block and never a big block so Im somewhat lost, Im smart enough not to go to big and could order one, but I would like to know what might work well with what I have. Definatly needs a good hit when it idles and to make some decent power. I have stock bore 454, 396 heads which I need to get numbers off from and c exactly what I have, single plane weiand team G intake, 750 carb, roller rockers, and patriot clipster headers, and will run about 2500 stall havent gottem convertor yet as I wanted to wait for cam sizing. Please help!!!

I would not combine a 2500 stall converter with a single plane manifold.

If you want to run the single plane think along the lines of a 3000-4000 stall converter.

If you want to only run a 2500 stall get a dual plane hi rise manifold.
A nice street cam for a 454 with a 2500 stall and dual plane manifold would be

My Bigblock had closed chambered '69 heads & .544 siingle pattern cam.
It was a blast in the "74 Camaro...Gosh I miss them days!!
IIRC the red line was around 6300 RPM.

The Lunati cam looks good...my chops are grinding!!
What is your goal for the motor & car?

I can warn you this--
Once you had a Bigblock...you'll never be satisfied with a smallblock!! IMHO LOLol!!

Yes fisrt big block except a couple trucks but they were work horses not for fun. I guess my goal all around for it is to just be nasty little street car.

Mustang tamer / / Mopar hunter---Cool!
We will be Bigblockin' soon too. I am personaly staying away from single plane because it won't be a hi-rev motor, nor will it get a bottle.
Mild with a lil spice!!

I think you will get more feed back from ppl who know how to help with the tech stuff. F-BIRD'88 makes a good tip.
IDK how it all adds up, I'm learning...but I think rear gears & tire size *may* play into it-- maybe not for a street beast.

Re: Need a little advice on cam size BBC

Exactly Mustang Tamer! Ive had all flavors of cars been into the whole mustang scene for years and worked 9 years at a ford dealer. Just got burned out a little and got this 85 z28 305 5 speed car after not having a toy for awhile. I had owned a late 80's GTA tpi 5.7 car, a 91 WS6 TA, an a 95 TA before getting into the mustang thing. I really enjoyed those cars alot so I got this one and thought Id see where it goes, of course the 305 did not satisfy very long before the itch creeped up and a bb kinda fell in my lap. I really appreciate any help from you guys on here on this swap, not really a noobie to the whole hot rod scene Ive had some very fast rides just happen to have a diffrent color blood pumpin through their veins and anymore like myself I got lost into the new age technology mod motors an such and kinda left the old school big blocks and carbs in the past and almost forgotten, in my mind anyways.

Re: Need a little advice on cam size BBC

K, well, check these under engine swap--(?) or advance search their names---
booboosean
& TheDevastator.
There are a few more but I don't remember names.
Any way, these guys did a how-to with photos, & what worked // didn't work for them--headers, exhaust, hammer time, etc...
The Devastator is still working out a few things.booboosean has been enjoying for some time. Read up on this stuff--VERY informative!!
If this is going to be a strip car, search out--
AlkyIROC, Shagwell, IHI. These guys have strip cars & are Bigblock powered. I'm sure there's more out there.
