I need help my 86 camaro 2.8 starts hard fuel pump dosent come on when u turn the key to the run position it starts after a few cranks(oil press builds up?)idels great give it a little gas your ok but to much and it sputters and bucks its got a code 54 i instaled a new fuel pump and relay also new maf when it sputters black smoke out of exhaust makes me think its to rich could this be bad quad driver in the ecm? can anyone help

 

did you check the fuel pump fuse and oil pressure sending unit?
i just replaced my pump, relay, fuse, and ospu...all died at the same time, and all were defective

 

just picked up a press switch going to try it tomarrow fingers crossed

 

If i recall correctly a code 54 means the ECM detected low or no voltage at the fuel pump even though it was told to turn on by the ECM. This usually traces back to a faulty fuel pump relay or something because whats happening is the ECM tells the fuel pump to come on to prime and it dosnt sets the code and will just crank. If the system was limited to this it wouldnt start however GM built in the oil pressure switch to kick in and bypass all that stuff to allow the pump to run should the relay or associated wiring fail. I would start troubleshooting that circuit.

 

i instaled a new pump,relay filter,maf once it starts it idles fine but give it much gas and it wants fo fall on its face acts like a vacume leak but pops threw the intake when u give it to much gas i engine has about 20k on it will a bad ecm have the same symptoms still only code is 54
