Sparks Coming from engine block when key turned
Just put my 350 back together after a saga with vortec heads. Went to start for first time. It ran, but when I turn the key, there is a large spark originating by the fuel pump and motor mount on the passengers side. Why is this happening?
Also, backfiring through the carb (Edelbrock 650cfm)

You obviously have a short to ground. Check all wires and make sure you dont have a hot wire grounding out on the block, may have a plug wire with the insulation worn through arcing on the block as well. Hard to tell the from description

Your spark is probably just a bad ground. Make sure the block is grounded to the frame with a good heavy ground strap and the battery is grounded to the block.

Also try advancing your timing to stop carb backfiring.
