Heat stove. There was a flexable piece that joined the exhaust manifold with the air cleaner.

It's called a heat stove. It directs hot air into the air cleaner housing via a tube in stock configuration, for cold starting/quick warm up.
Those are stock exhaust manifolds.

In cold weather, if you were running the OE air cleaner, sure, why not. The piece usually disappears when an open air element is used. If you'd like more info, do a search on THERMAC.
