engine build: help with picking heads
So im on a budget building a 350 tpi motor. I know there are better inake options but I would like to keep it tpi, of course with aftermarket siamesed runners, a ported pentium, and ported stock intake. right now the block im building on is a L05. Right now i have all i need to install a Lt1 cam. I am having trouble deciding on heads. I am a college student, so cost is a big part of the decision. So far I have looked into
A) porting the swirl ports (most say its a dumb thing to do)
B) get vortec heads (that dang tpi vortec manifold is just too expensive)
C) Aluminum L98 heads with some port work
D)Lt1 heads ( i know they can work on the block with modifications, but probably not the inake.)
C) is what i am thinking right now, since I can get a set of those pretty cheap and use the stock manifold, and aluminum is always good.
300+ rwhp is my goal. I know that shouldnt be too hard to accomplish
I would like some wisdom from all of you guys, so let me know what you think
Thanks
Wes

Iron or aluminum L98 heads would be fine, or LG4/L69/LB9 heads.

For an ultra-low budget, you should be able to get some 082 castings very cheap.
Without putting money into head reconditioning, then it comes down to how good of shape the heads are in, to include guide wear, valves, and springs.
Seals are about $1 each, so are not an issue.
What I'm saying is that if you find some cheap heads, but they need work, then you're better off using your swirlports if they are in good shape.

Thanks Apeiron I think i will definitely be looking for some alumiunum l98 heads.
and 305sbc, I know what you mean. Hopefully the ones i find will be in good shape. Though i do plan on getting em cleaned up and porting a little.
