ok don't shoot me but what would be safe..
My cars valve seals are going. I have the imfamous blue smoke issue. I don't have the cash right now to replace the seals,i'm trying to get everything in order to pass inspection. Could I put thicker oil into the engine? That was an old trick that atleast buys you some time. Is 20w 50 to thick or should I go with 10w40..there is 10w 30 in it now.. I WILL fix this right but like I said just buying about 1 month.

20w 50 would probably do it, but I can't recommend that. If you can't afford valve seals, then you probably can't afford the fuel to get to the testing station. When I did my seals, I got 16 umbrella seals for about $2.50.

I just went to the local parts store and asked for 16 umbrella seals for a 305, and a pair of valve cover gaskets. The valve cover gaskets are 10 or 20.

ok sounds good..now one more dumb question..since its an unbrella seal does it go over the original one?Just slide it down the valve and tighten everything up?

With the heads on the engine, you need some tools to replace/install valve seals.
You need some way to keep the valve from dropping down. The most common way is with a fitting in the spark plug hole and compressed air. Some people have had luck using rope in through the hole.
You then need to compress the valve spring to remove the keepers and retainer so that the valve springs can be removed. That's why you need some way to keep the valve in place. Once the springs are removed, you can replace the valve seals.
Parts are cheap. Tools and the time to do it can get expensive depending on your mechanical ability.
Technically only the intake valves need the seals. Oil can't get sucked into the cylinder past the exhaust guide.

ok so fill the cylinder full of air, bring engine around to TDC and follow firing order..then set valve lashing when all done..Does that sound about right?I was told also a clothpin just incase the compressor takes a **** or breaker trips..I guess that would be cheap insurance.

You got it! Apply air to cylinder once at TDC of the desired one. Use your compression tester (but be sure to remove the valve core in the end before using). You can thread a nipple on that matches that of your compressor.
Use the better "posi" seals instead of the cheaper umbrella seals. They provide a much better seal.
