Vibrating engine

I got an 85 trans am in a trade... it's got a 350 engine with a 400 transmission. After driving it a little it began to vibrate, first I thought it was the tires but then it would do it just sitting still. my thought was there were some loose bolts either on the torque converter or the trans.

I was right, there was only 1 bolt holding the torque converter to the flywheel... I tightened that and then tried to add more bolts. I was only able to add 1 more bolt, as the other 2 (total of 4) are off by about the width of the bolt.

question: did whoever do this use the wrong flywheel for the torque converter? does a 400 trans use a different torque converter than a 700r4? could it be I need to remove all the bolts and retry lining them up? I'd hate to have to pull the engine to fix this as it's not a car I'm keeping just fixing it up to sell...but I can't sell this thing the way it is.

thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Re: Vibrating engine

a 350 engine comes with a flywheel that has 3 bolts for the torque converter. a 700r4 350turbo etc only has 3 torque converter bolts. your 400 should only have 3 torque converter bolts. where did the 400 come from? its not stock.

Yeah, I thought that they only had 3 bolts... I have no idea where any of this came... Guess i need to jack it up higher and really look hard... I can see 4 places where a bolt can go but will mark it and double check.

Re: Vibrating engine

your flywheel will have all sorts of different holes, if you look directly under your torque converter you can see where the bolts go through, just sit under the converter and turn the engine, mark with a sharpie or something on the converter and use it as a starting point. count them, there should be 3. if theres 4 then im out of the convo cause i aint gotta clue. good luck
